For Teens
The sexuality of people with a developmental disability has long been ignored by society. The avoidance of such education is ingrained in societal fear and uneasiness about sexuality in general, and especially for those who exhibit any kind of difference. Professionals are often poorly trained on the issues, which increases the likelihood of students and clients being denied the education. A pattern of ignorance restricts access to sexuality education; which can risk their health, limit their knowledge of prevention for pregnancy and infections, and further make these individuals vulnerable to emotional and sexual dangers. It can also decrease self-esteem, limit knowledge about dating and consent, and create a greater social barrier with other same aged peers.
Sexuality is not just sexual intercourse or sexual activity. The concept of sexuality is much broader, and includes;
- Being male or female, and social roles
- How people view their bodies and experience their sexual desires
- How bodies function and change with age
- Experiencing pleasure
- Understanding reproduction
- The sexual relationship with the self and with others
- Subtleties of flirting, friendships, and being a boyfriend/girlfriend
- Healthy and unhealthy aspects of intimate relationships
- The role of sex in a dating relationship
- Responsible decision making and consequences (prevention of unwanted outcomes)
This program focuses on all such aspects and more. Called the R-E-S-P-E-C-T Program, it delivers information on sexual health and intimate boundaries, using appropriate imagery and focusing on the relationship.
