Heart of ASD and Counseling Relationships
This training is specific to the needs of counselors and therapists who work individuals or couples with an autism spectrum disorder, or undiagnosed ASD.
In recent years, more and more information about Autism/Asperger syndrome/spectrum has come to the forefront. Many adults, who have or have not been formally diagnosed, may find themselves in relationships where they struggle to connect and understand their partner’s needs. These individuals may end up seeking marital and/or sex therapy.
All therapists need to be aware of the specific strengths and impairments that may be related to this spectrum, such as differences in thought processing, sensory experiences, and ability to communicate and empathize.
Traditional marital therapy may not be effective, and may even be damaging with couples where one or both partner(s) is on the spectrum. This training focuses on the most up to date research in this field to help better the understanding of the therapeutic process with couples where one partner exhibits characteristics of an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Issues that will be covered:
- Definitions/Triad of impairments
- Co-Morbidity
- Effect on Sexuality (including gender identity, sensory issues, orientation issues, and libido)
- Communication/ Intimacy issues
- Tips for Partners
- Tips for the Counselor/Therapist working with individuals or couples
This training is available in select cities, or as an in-service program at your Institution.
