For Adults and Couples
Strategies for Healthy Intimate Relationships and ASD
Many older teens and adults with an ASD struggle with how to find a partner, or maintain an emotionally healthy relationship. Having an awareness of the components of a healthy relationship, and the possible challenges of intimacy are crucial for success.
Individuals with an ASD need to learn the skills involved for intimacy with another. Psycho-social education is personal education that focuses on education surrounding the issues and strategies for coping. Topics that can be addressed include:
- Understanding the characteristics of an autism spectrum disorder and how this relates to intimacy with another.
- Areas of strengths and areas of weakness.
- How an ASD and sensory processing affects sexuality.
- Addressing possible anxiety and depression.
- Information about sexual health.
- Addressing individual and couples’ needs.
While the sessions can be therapeutic, it is not “therapy” per se and focuses on the present, with little emphasis on self-disclosure. The aim is to educate, and to work together for manageable and effective strategies. Sessions can be geared for individuals or couples, either in person or by telephone.
