Support Group for those in an intimate relationship with someone with an Autism Spectrum Disorder

1 There is very little discussion about adults who have an Autism Spectrum Disorder. There is even less discussion about the partners who love them, and support them. At times, partners receive very little acknowledgment and support for their roles, and the unusual behaviours they sometimes live with. Traditional counseling may be difficult where there is not an understanding of ASD and its impact on the intimacy.

While all relationships have their challenges, many partners of those with an ASD experience increased levels of anxiety, confusion, and even depression at times. Social connection and support by those who share similar experiences can help the individuals in these relationships, as well as teach more positive strategies to improve the quality of their interactions.

We welcome all partners of someone who is married or in an intimate relationship with a person with autistic disorder, Asperger’s syndrome, PDD-NOS, any other development delay. A diagnosis is not needed. This group will focus on the support of the partners. Topics that can be addressed include:

  • Understanding the characteristics of an autism spectrum disorder and how this relates to intimacy with another Understanding sexuality and ASD, and improving sexual relationshipsAddressing anxiety and depression, and offering strategies for coping
  • Discussion of both partner’s perspectives of the problems
  • Discussion of diagnosis, and denial or acceptance
  • Discussion of extended family roles and dynamics
  • Discussion of parenting, with children with an ASD or otherwise
  • Strategies for increasing communication in the relationship
  • Validation for everyone involved
